Treat your Valentine to something sweet and spicy with these cinnamon hearts! Here’s Jane’s recipe for you to bake your own.
- 225g butter
- 50g lard
- 175g caster sugar
- 340g plain flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Put the butter, lard and sugar into a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Add the flour and cinnamon and blend until the mixture starts to come together, but be careful not to overwork it as it will become tough. Form the mixture into a ball, wrap it in cling film and chill in the fridge for approximately 5 hours.
- Sprinkle the work surface with a little flour, remove the dough from the fridge and roll it to just over 1.2cm (½ inch) thick. Using a heart-shaped cutter, cut the biscuits from the dough and transfer them to an ungreased baking sheet. Place in the fridge for about 45 minutes.
- Heat the oven to 170°C (155°C fan-assisted / 325°F). Pierce each biscuit with a skewer to make a hole in the centre or near the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until they just start to colour.
- When the biscuits are cooked, remove from the oven. Pierce each hole again with the skewer and transfer to a baking rack to cool. When the biscuits are ready, thread a ribbon through each one and hang as desired.
