APRIL - "Spring has sprung" WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE GARDEN?


April is here and so is spring, we have had an erratic March with snow and frost which means for most of us we have yet to plant our seeds and sow our vegetables. The weather in April is typically sunshine with showers which means lots of growth including the weeds! Take advantage of the spring sun and get into the garden this month.

TOP JOBS THIS MONTH

  • Prepare vegetable seed beds and sow some vegetables under cover
  • Sow seeds indoors
  • Begin weeding regularly
  • Plant early, second early and maincrop potatoes when the conditions are right
  • Sow cabbages and broccoli
  • Sow maincrop broadbeans
  • Sow spinach
  • Herbs: sow basil indoors, outdoors sow parsley and fennel
  • Protect fruit trees from the birds by netting them off
  • Thin out seedlings
  • Create sturdy supports and climbing frames for peas and beans

March is an erratic month for weather, fresh bright days but frosts at night - it is essential to check your local weather in March before planting out your seeds and plants.

FEBRUARY “Spring is in sight” WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE GARDEN?

Things to do in the garden in february

JANUARY “The Coldest Month” WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE GARDEN?


In January, your garden could need protecting from frosts, gale-force winds and heavy rain. Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for damage and consider moving plants to sunnier positions to maximise light. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, food is scarce for them over winter.
