Poundland scoops the Grocer Gold ‘Variety Discounter of the Year’ award for a second year running
Poundland, Europe’s biggest single price discount retailer, has been awarded ‘Variety Discounter of the Year’ for the second consecutive year at the esteemed Grocer Gold Awards.
The ‘Variety Discounter of the Year’ award recognises discounters for which grocery is not the core part of their offer, but is nonetheless a growing and important element of the business.
Poundland had a record 2013, making a significant impact in the sector with a host of new consumer initiatives and innovative products. These included its first ever discount retailer celebrity partnership, with its Jane Asher bakeware range.
Total sales were up by 13.3% year-on-year for the business and it continued its ambitious expansion plans, opening 70 new stores.
Jim McCarthy, CEO, at Poundland comments: “Winning Variety Discounter of the Year for the second consecutive year is a fantastic accolade following what has been one of Poundland’s most significant years to date. We are honoured to receive industry recognition for our ongoing commitment to deliver customers amazing value every day.”
“I’d like to thank the whole team at Poundland, which has worked incredibly hard to offer quality and exciting products at our £1 price point, enabling our customers to economise rather than compromise, no matter what their budget is.”
