Colourful Blooms - Pot Marigold

The Pot Marigold, scientifically known as Calendula officinalis, is a vibrant and cheerful flower that adds colour to any garden or landscape. This annual herb is beautiful and beneficial and is known for its bright yellow and orange blooms. The petals are often used in herbal remedies and culinary dishes, providing a pop of colour to salads and decorations. Pot Marigolds thrive in sunny locations and are relatively easy to grow, making them a favourite among gardeners. Their blooms bring joy with their dazzling hues and attract beneficial pollinators like bees and butterflies, enhancing the garden's overall health. With a long flowering season, these resilient flowers bloom from spring until frost, providing continuous beauty in the garden.

Instructions For Use

Easy Sow Outdoors

Once the risk of frost has passed, seeds can be sown directly where they are to flower from spring through the season. The easiest way to grow your calendula is direct outdoor sowing. Prepare the area by removing weeds and ranking to break up the soil. Scatter seeds over the area, cover with 1.5cm of soil, and water well. Seedlings can be thinned to 30cm apart when large enough to handle.

Sow Indoors

Sowing seeds in trays or pots of good-quality compost and lightly covering them with a layer of fine soil can achieve earlier flowering. Continue to water as needed and place in a warm conservatory or greenhouse until seedlings are ready to transplant outdoors.

Hardening Off

Before moving plants outside, make sure the risk of frost has passed. To acclimatise, place the plants outdoors during the day and bring them indoors at night. Repeat this process for seven days, after which the plants can remain outdoors.

Calendula, also known as pot marigold, is ideal for beds, borders, and containers. It effectively repels tomato worms and aphids, making it an excellent companion plant for deterring unwanted pests. Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage more flowers. Calendula, also known as pot marigold, is perfect for adding to patio containers and cut flower displays.
