Speedy Seed Early Indoor Sowing - Garden Cress Curled
Garden cress, particularly the curled variety, is a delightful and fast-growing herb ideal for early indoor sowing. With its vibrant green, feather-like leaves, it adds a refreshing peppery flavour to salads, sandwiches, and garnishes. The seeds germinate quickly, often within just a few days, making it perfect for those looking to jump-start their gardening ambitions indoors, even before the last frost. To grow curled garden cress indoors, simply sow the seeds in a shallow container filled with nutrient-rich soil, ensuring they are just lightly covered. Keep the soil moist and place the container in a bright location with indirect sunlight. In just a couple of weeks, you can enjoy the crisp, flavorful leaves of this versatile herb.
Ingredients
Cress Curled Leaf, Lepidium Sativum.
Instructions For Use
Sow Indoors
For best results, sow seeds densely into pots or trays of damp, good-quality compost; there is no need to cover them with soil. Keep the area warm and sunny, and cover it with a plastic bag to speed up germination. Cress can also be grown on damp cotton wool.
Hardening off
Make sure the danger of frost has passed before moving plants outside. To acclimatise, place the plants outdoors during the day and bring them indoors at night. Repeat this process for 7-10 days, after which the plants can remain outdoors—perfect addition to a patio herb garden or container vegetable patch.
Sow Outdoors
Select a partially shaded area with moderately rich garden soil. Sow seeds densely and cover them with a damp towel or brown paper until they germinate. Keep the cress moist until harvest. When grown outdoors, cress can take up to 14 days to harvest.
Cress is perfect for growing with children as the results are so fast. Try growing cress in clean eggshells filled with damp cotton wool and seeds. The shells can be painted and decorated while waiting for the shoots to emerge!
A highly nutritious vegetable rich in vitamin K and protein, cress should be an everyday staple for many kitchens and couldn't be easier to grow.
